As the country hosts a series of major sporting events over the next few years, Sport New Zealand is leading a project called 'In Our Backyard' with the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment and four national sporting organisations to further shape learning through sport in schools and kura.

The project complements the Healthy Active Learning initiative, a collaboration between Sport New Zealand and the Ministries of Health and Education, within the context of the Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy, to improve the wellbeing of tamariki through healthy eating and drinking and quality physical activity.

Clusters of teachers in Wellington Waikato, Auckland and Tai Tokerau are helping shape services with ākonga, their communities and clubs. Tākarokaro began development in 2021 and will go through final testing in term one 2022. The full Tākarokaro service will then be available to schools for the first time in terms two and three 2022, as Aotearoa New Zealand builds towards the Rugby World Cup 2021 (playing in 2022).
